It gives us great pleasure to present some of Göttingen´s characteristics to our future guests. The following short portrait of our city aims at arousing your interest.

Location and traffic links
Göttingen is situated in the middle of Germany, at a distance of only a few kilometres from the exact geographic centre of the Federal Republic. Counting 125.000 inhabitants, the city covers an area of about 116 square kilometres. It enjoys a wonderful location in terms of road and train links: Göttingen can be reached easily via motorway A 7 and roads B 3 and B 27. Also travelling by train is uncomplicated because the Central Station is an Intercity Express stop. Göttingen is crossed by the touristic routes “Deutsche Ferienstraße Alpen-Ostsee”, “Harz-Heide-Straße” and “Deutsche Märchenstraße”.

A city creating knowledge
For many generations, Göttingen is an internationally renowned university city. The famous Georg-August-University was founded in 1734 and has produced 44 Nobel prize winners. Today, 25.000 students are registered. The closeness of the University is especially advantageous for the economy of the town and of the entire region of south Lower Saxony.

Transfer of knowledge and innovation
Apart from Braunschweig and Hannover, Göttingen belongs to the most important locations of industry and commerce in Lower Saxony. The transfer of knowledge between economy and university research produces valuable synergetic effects, so that Göttingen is one of the most important locations in North and Central Germany with regard to research-related innovations. Institutions like the so-called “Measurement Valley” are the outcome of the close symbiosis between economy and science.

Culture and lifestyle
Being our guest, you will stay in the heart of the old town centre of Göttingen. Here, you will find the amalgamation of reminiscences to the medieval commercial town with the atmosphere of a modern university city. The so-called “Gänseliesel”, the world-famous landmark of our city, and the Old Town Hall, constructed during Göttingen´s first period of glory (13 th to 15 th century), are both only a few hundred meters away from here. The pedestrian precinct offers a great variety of small shops, romantic bistros, fashionable bars and exquisite restaurants. In order to enjoy your evening, you can visit the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra or one of the three theatres: the venerable “Deutsches Theater”, the respected “Junges Theater”, performing very modern productions, or the “Theater im Operationssaal” (ThOP), an experimental stage for students. In addition, you will discover a multitude of cultural highlights like, for example, music events or cabaret. Should you have questions, please contact us – we will be glad to give you our advice!
